Halloween High Season

PROJECT SAMHAIN is my independent Halloween field transmission: Denton at the center, the wider Dallas–Fort Worth season within reach. Its high season runs September 1–October 31.

It sits inside a longer arc I call The Long Descent: summer solstice to winter solstice, as the evenings draw in and the world gradually gives more room to darkness. September’s stubborn heat belongs to that story as much as the first cold night does.

This is a place for the whole texture of Halloween: haunted streets and old houses, local rituals, strange films, dark music, autumn light, handmade monsters, remembered nights and whatever is waiting just beyond the familiar. Sometimes that means leaving the house. Sometimes it means putting a record on and letting the room change.

Expect reports, photographs, films, interviews and reviews as the season unfolds. We take Halloween seriously. Ourselves, considerably less so.

Denton is the epicenter

Denton doesn’t save Halloween for one night. Its 31 Days of Halloween fills October with citywide decorations, local art, performances, markets, ghost stories and an entire community making the town strange. The Texas Legislature designated Denton the Halloween Capital of Texas in 2025.

That monthlong commitment is why this publication starts here. Denton gets a dedicated place in every dispatch: useful local developments, archival discoveries and my perspective. The rest of the Metroplex matters too—Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and the towns around them—but Denton is the point of departure.

Seasonal scope

The Long Descent runs from the summer solstice to the winter solstice. Within it, PROJECT SAMHAIN’s daily Halloween High Season runs September 1–October 31. After Halloween comes the run-up to Thanksgiving, then the passage from Thanksgiving to the solstice. The seasonal world continues across Christmas to New Year’s; these later phases describe its atmosphere, not an extension of the daily mailing schedule.

Editorial structure

Every dispatch follows the same order, so you can find the part you need. Read it on the site or by email; the Archive keeps the past editions within reach.

Out there, then in here

Walkabouts, photographs, interviews and longer reports belong with the stories they tell. They can lead a dispatch, appear in Denton Watch or carry a review farther than a calendar listing can. Published pieces remain in the Archive, with their photographs, clips and source links attached.

Source standards

PROJECT SAMHAIN is built from four kinds of material, and nothing else:

• ·Public sources: official venue and organizer pages, ticketing pages, public city notices, public records and encyclopedic references, each linked from the listing it supports.
• ·Direct observations intended for publication: things the desk saw in public and wrote down to print, labeled OBSERVED.
• ·Submitted material used with permission: tips, listings and photographs sent to the desk, published only with the sender’s consent and credited as they ask.
• ·Credited media with documented sources: original work, permitted contributions, public-domain works, promotional images and identified archival material. Rights notes accompany the work.

Every listing carries a source link and its recorded source-check date. Changes and unresolved dates remain visible. Check the linked organizer before making plans; a dated record does not imply continuous verification.

Dated dispatches retain their original context. The current calendar carries later changes; the live forecast is separate from weather recorded in an earlier edition.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it in the web edition, note the correction at the bottom of the affected dispatch with a timestamp and the original text, and carry it in the next morning’s email. Corrections stay with the dispatch permanently. Silent edits are limited to typos. To report an error, use the contact below and include the dispatch number.

Media rights

Photographs, films, recordings and artwork carry credits and source links. Original reports and permitted contributions stay attached to the dispatch or collection record where they appear.

• ·Nothing autoplays. Video and audio show a visible play control and start only when you press it.
• ·Original video ships with captions and a transcript; every image has alt text.
• ·Third-party media appears only through an official embed or a public-domain source, never as decoration. Film and record artwork uses original treatments instead of borrowed posters.
• ·When an embed fails or images are blocked, the text carries the dispatch on its own.
• ·Every media record carries a source, a rights basis, credit, alt text, a crop position and an approval status. Only APPROVED records render; everything else renders an original PROJECT SAMHAIN card naming the subject and media type. REJECTED records are kept, with the reason, so a refusal is not repeated as a mistake.

Sponsorship and affiliate disclosure

There are no sponsors and no affiliate links in this edition. If that changes, sponsored placements will be labeled SPONSORED in the listing itself and never disguised as editorial; affiliate links will be disclosed where they appear. Sponsors do not see dispatches before publication and do not influence status labels or recommendations.

A name for the turn toward darkness

Samhain—roughly “SOW-in,” with the first syllable rhyming with “now”—names the traditional Irish seasonal festival around November 1. Its eve is October 31. It marks the turn from harvest toward winter, one of four major seasonal divisions of the traditional Irish calendar.

Folklore gives the season visitors and uncertain boundaries: the dead returning, disguises offering protection, fortunes glimpsed before winter. Later customs traveled with emigrants and changed in their new settings. The American celebration grew through that movement, rather than arriving fully formed.

Modern Halloween has several histories braided together: seasonal customs, the Christian calendar of All Saints and All Souls, migration, neighborhood invention and popular entertainment. Calling it an unchanged ancient festival would flatten a much stranger story. Customs recorded in more recent centuries are evidence of those customs, not a clear window onto every prehistoric belief.

For this publication, the name points toward that seasonal threshold: the harvest ending, the nights lengthening, the familiar becoming a little less reliable. Here in North Texas, the darkness usually arrives before the cold.
